Read Book Online is a great resource for 18th-early 20th century essays, poems, short stories and novels. I have found their collecton of essays a dreadful trap into which it is easy to fall. Many of these authors are recognizeable even to non-English majors but most of us wouldn't be able to offer up much of a description of why they were memorable or for what they were once famous. Even so, they remain very accessible through their essays.
