Folk Tales from Japan

Kids Web Japan - Not exactly my cup of tea but it does have a series of traditional Japanese folktales. I find the Japanese folktales fascinating, there are at the same time so many parallels with many European folktales and yet you often hit a perspective or angle of the story that is so different. This site allows you to select a tale which yields an animated slide show of the story with the text below each slide.

Aesop's Fables

Welcome to Aesop's Fables

Since 1994 Professor Copper Giloth has assigned her students in Art 271, Introduction to Computing in the Fine Arts, the task of illustrating the traditional Aesop's fables along side their own retellings of the fables in a modern setting. This collection gathers together artwork from several semesters.

Over the years the Web has developed to allow for more action and interactivity. In the earlier versions, the stories are illustrated with still images set in simple HTML pages. More recently, students have been working with Macromedia Flash to develop their stories as animations, some with sound and interactivity.

Australian Aboriginal Dreamtime Legends

The Australian Aborigines speak of jiva or guruwari, a "seed power" deposited in the earth. In the Aboriginal world view, every meaningful activity, event, or life process that occurs at a particular place leaves behind a vibrational residue in the earth, as plants leave an image of themselves as seeds. The shape of the land - its mountains, rocks, riverbeds, and water-holes - and its unseen vibrations echo the events that brought that place into creation. Everything in the natural world is a symbolic footprint of the meta-physical beings whose actions created our world. As with a seed, the potency of an earthly location is wedded to the memory of its origin. The Aborigines called this potency the "Dreaming" of a place, and this Dreaming constitutes the sacredness of the earth. Only in extraordinary states of consciousness can one be aware of, or attuned to, the inner dreaming.

Folktales

HIDY, Folks! You have happened upon FOLKTALES, FOLKLORE, AND OTHER "FOLKSY" STUFF

Grimm's Fairy Tales

Looking for a sweet, soothing tale to waft you toward dreamland? Look somewhere else. The stories collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the early 1800s serve up life as generations of central Europeans knew it—capricious and often cruel. The two brothers, patriots determined to preserve Germanic folktales, were only accidental entertainers.

Once they saw how the tales bewitched young readers, the Grimms, and editors aplenty after them, started "fixing" things. Tales gradually got softer, sweeter, and primly moral. Yet all the polishing never rubbed away the solid heart of the stories, now read and loved in more than 160 languages.

Our presentation brings you 12 unvarnished tales, based on a 1914 translation.

Tales Collected by the Brothers Grimm

For these stories we give the original 1884 text of Margaret Hunt, by all accounts a good translation, if somewhat old-fashioned by present-day standards. Hunt is based on the last revised edition of the Grimms tales. This electronic text follows Hunt as faithfully as possible and is, so far as we know, the only internet version to do so.

Stories of the Dreaming

Storytelling is an integral part of life for Indigenous Australians. From an early age, storytelling plays a vital role in educating children. The stories help to explain how the land came to be shaped and inhabited; how to behave and why; where to find certain foods, etc.

Gathered around the camp fire in the evening, on an expedition to a favourite waterhole, or at a landmark of special significance, parents, Elders or Aunts and Uncles use the stories as the first part of a child's education.

Then, as children grow into young adults, more of the history and culture is revealed. Adults then take responsibility for passing on the stories to the following generations. In this way, the Stories of the Dreaming have been handed down over thousands of years.

All the storytellers you will meet on this site are active in keeping the stories alive and passing them on the next generation.

These are stories of the history and culture of the people, handed down in this way since the beginning of time, since the Dreamtime.
