Summer Reading Lists
Most schools have a list of required or suggested readings that they would like their students to do over the summer. We are happy to incorporate such lists into this site so that it becomes easy to find and order the books being recommended. We strongly recommend that you read the schools original instructions and lists and we will hotlink to that site where it exists. We will incorporate their instructions where it seems clear but it is always best to check the original site.
Where a particular ISBN (a publishing industry number that identifies a unique edition of a book) is specified, we will hotlink to that edition. Occassionally that specific ISBN is not yet published or has gone out of print. We will note that situation when it occurs. Often times there is a virtually identical book from the same publisher with a different ISBN (for example when they have changed the cover artwork but the text is exactly the same). In those cases we will hotlink to the available edition.
Summer reading can be hard on a book, banging around the bottom of the car on long trips, getting sand in the pages, etc. Usually books from summer reading lists have at least two if not three formats. There is almost always a paperback version and that is what we link to by default. If there is only a hardback version in print, we will link to that. If you have a number of children that will be reading the book, you might want to consider purchasing a hardback (or even library binding) version if they are available. Just do a quick search on the book's title to find alternative formats of the book available.
It is increasingly common for there to be audio (either cassette or CD) versions of stories. While there is no substitute for actually reading a book, there is also a place for hearing stories as well. We have found that our three children (each about two years apart) can often all happily listen to the same story on long country drives. If your children get car-sick reading in the car or if you have several children that enjoy talking about books, you might want to consider also getting an audio version. Be careful about abridged versions: my personal preference is only to go for the unabridged versions.
